Tribunals

Supervisor: Reuben Kirkham

Lecturer

Tribunals frequently make decisions about people with disabilities, for example in claims of disability discrimination, mental capacity cases, and disability benefits. However, there has been little analysis of their decision making, which is important to ensure that they are accountable in how they treat people with disabilities. One of the issues is that existing research requires manual coding of tribunal decisions, which are lengthy and complex.

This project will look at supporting this coding process by way of semi-automation, and fits within a wider project funded by the Monash Data Futures institute. The collaborations would allow those involved to label cases based on the type of disability, the legal issue and the outcome, which would in turn enable empirical legal analysis.

The project aims to make tribunals more accountable in their treatment of people with disabilities, by improving on annotation techniques for tribunal decisions using semi-automation.
